Rhythm
Shape repetition, pause and change so an installation has a recognizable pulse.
Definition
Rhythm is the pattern of repetition, variation and pause that gives a spatial experience continuity over time.
Core principle
Rhythm gives people time to notice, anticipate and remember. Silence is part of the composition.
Questions to ask
- How long does the audience remain in the space?
- Which moments should repeat?
- Where should variation appear?
- How much quiet time does the architecture need?
Recommended approach
- Create a simple recognizable base pattern.
- Introduce variation at meaningful intervals.
- Use pauses to reset attention.
- Align long-term rhythm with the venue's daily operation.
Common pitfalls
- Repeating without variation
- Changing too quickly for the audience to notice
- Treating maximum activity as the default state
